Inspired by the preludes of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Chopin’s 24 Preludes emerged during his disastrous stay in Valdemossa, on the island of Majorca, with George Sand. They are a pillar of the piano repertoire, to the same extent as Schubert’s formidable Wanderer-Fantasie and Brahms’s ultimate works, genuine meditations on ebbing life.

A magnificent recital programme imagined by Alexander Melnikov, whom the Festival has had the privilege to host on several occasions together with violinist Isabelle Faust, in particular in 2017 during a memorable cycle of Beethoven’s complete violin sonatas.
