«Ars Gallica» – literally «Gallic art» – was the motto chosen by the National Music Society, founded in Paris in 1871 (on the aftermath of the humiliation of the Franco-Prussian war) to counter the increasing influence of German music (above all Wagner) in France. With Camille Saint-Saëns as President, it represented a platform for numerous young creators to show their new works, such as Gabriel Fauré’s First Violin Sonata, on the programme of this recital.
