GALA Orchestral Concert

Sunday, 29 July 2018
6 pm, Saanen Church

Like many romantic musicians, Felix Mendelssohn profited from the trend at the time of traveling to discover and absorb other cultures. Born into an open and affluent family, his first trips were made at a young age. He discovered Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland in 1822: he was 13 years old and returned with magnificent drawings in his baggage as well as many folk songs in his memory that he would incorporate into his compositions. The theme from the Scherzo of the String Symphony No. 11 is a wedding song from Emmental, which originally would have been performed by a choir of yodelers as an overture to the evening.
