The last sonatas, the Quintet for Two Cellos and the Schwanengesang are often mentioned, but Franz Schubert's exceptional and final year of 1828 is also the scene of sublime outbursts in the unusual register of works for two pianos: twilight works such as the “Lebensstürme” – literally “the storms of life”  which portray the violence of the contrasts of our emotions, amplified by the premonition of a forthcoming end. To bring them to life here, two generations of pianists: the “living legend” Mitsuko Uchida – with a career spanning more than half a century – and the forty-something Jonathan Biss, both of whom have been co-directors of the famous Marlboro Festival Vermont since 2018.
