Founded in 1994 at the Royal College of Music in London, initially accompanied by the members of the Alban Berg and Amadeus Quartets, the Belcea Quartet has for over a quarter of a century been a benchmark in the highly competitive world of the string quartet, as exemplified by Beethoven's complete cycles, which sealed its “legacy”. After Britten, they have chosen to perform possibly the most beautiful quartet ever composed: Schubert's “Death and the Maiden”. An overwhelming “act of faith”, in which Life supports a radiant – though uneven – face-to-face with Death, and in which the incredible virtuosity of the writing disappears beneath the irresistible wave of expressivity.
