He is undoubtedly the key composer of this 2019 Gstaad Menuhin Festival 2019. Not only is Camille Saint-Saëns a French «thoroughbred», but his abundant work covers more than half a century of troubled history. Attached throughout his life to the classical tradition, it is surprising to note that he only showed an interest for string quartets towards the end of his life. His first opus is even dated one day after that of Claude Debussy, though the latter was twenty-seven years younger. Although their worlds are divided by a real generational rift, they have in common the inspiration they owe to the greatest violinist of the time, Master of the famous Franco-Belgian School, Eugène Ysaÿe.
