Founded in Vienna thirty years ago, the Mosaïques Quartet returns to the festival after more than a decade. The ensemble is distinguished for their subtle interpretations on historical instruments of masterpieces from the classic and romantic periods. They will perform Schubert’s last string quartet, a work sprinkled with motives from Ländler and his own songs, a kind of evocation of the prayer that he wrote down in 1823, a premonition of the death that he sensed approaching: “Sieh, vernichtet liegt im Staube, unerhörtem Gram zu Raube, meines Lebens Martergang” (See the martyrdom, which is my life, lies stricken in the dust, afflicted by unbearable anguish and nearing eternal extinction.)
